Top 5 Superhero Movies of All Time
Summer has always been a period where Hollywood rolls out it's biggest blockbusters of the year. With today's release of The Green Lantern, big budget movie studios have looked towards the comic book industry for the next big thing. Some of these movies go on to gross millions of dollars while others (which are actually worth watching) fly under the radar. We've experienced our fair share of winners and flops over the past few years but we have complied a list of our top 5 superhero movies.
#5 The Incredible Hulk
Okay..I know what you're thinking! The Ang Lee "Hulk" disaster from 2003 this is not. The Incredible Hulk was a 2008 reboot starring Edward Norton as Bruce Banner. This movie was a box office success but was harshly overshadowed in the media by the over-hyped Iron Man movie. The Hulk's story was retold as a military experiment gone wrong, turning mild mannered Bruce Banner into the Hulk with a crazed mercenary (Tim Roth) hell bent to stop the Hulk by any means necessary. This dynamic created a film with just the right mix of sadness, awe and adrenaline rushing action. The last battle scene was epic needless to say. The Incredible Hulk is truly a very underrated movie.
Based on the comic book series Hellblazer from Vertigo Comics, this movie is a great adaptation starring Keanu Reeves. Keanu plays John Constantine, a human with the ability to perceive and communicate with half-angels and half-demons in their true form. He seeks salvation from eternal damnation in Hell for a suicide attempt in his youth. This movie is one of the best kept secrets in the genre. The action, story and special effects were very well executed and and a younger Shia Labeouf provided excellent comic relief. If you haven't seen this movie, you are missing out on a classic.
#3 Blade II
Before the series was hijacked by an out of place Ryan Reynolds and some other random chick, Blade was T-H-E superhero movie franchise of the late 90s. Arguably, it can be said that the superhero movie boom came from the success of the original Blade movie in 1998. Blade II was a masterpiece. The story was compelling, thrilling and very well thought out plot wise. The special effects were second to none during that time period and even the random comic relief added to the likeability of this film. Blade II is one of the best Marvel comics movies to date.
#2 Spider Man 2
The first Spiderman film was simply amazing. It set the tone for our likeable hero, Peter Parker, but Spiderman 2 took the epic to the next level. Spiderman 2 set the mark for what a superhero movie can potentially be. Some might say that the movie set the bar so high, that the horrible Spiderman 3 had no chance of topping it's predecessor. In the second installment, Peter Parker not only struggles with his nemises Dr. Octopus but also has to battle his dillillusionment from his powers, continue hiding a dark secret from his best friend and struggle with winning over the love of his life. The film grossed over $783 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects that year. Spiderman 2 was action packed but the emotionally charged backdrop made this movie a classic.
#1 The Dark Knight
I can remember seeing The Dark Knight on opening day. This is not only the best superhero movies in my opinion, but it is one of the greatest movies of all time -- period. This film was Oscar worthy in so many categories including a chilling portrayal of the Joker by the late Heath Ledger. The Dark Knight not only excited comic book fans but movie goers around the world as well with over $1 billion in total revenue. That type of bank roll made the sequel the seventh highest-grossing film of all time. Money talks.
