Plaxico Burress released from prison
In one of the best moments in sports history, Plaxico Burress made a once in a lifetime catch in the final minute of Superbowl XLV. The catch sent the underdog New York Giants into Superbowl history and the undefeated New England Patriots into sorrow after being handed their first loss of the year on the world’s biggest stage. Burress became an instant hero that all of us could only dream about becoming when we were kids.
Flash forward to 9 months later and this same man found himself in court facing a jail sentence.
Burress, with a handgun tucked in his sweatpants, visited a popular New York City nightclub with fellow teammate Antonio Pierce. Burress' weapon slipped from his waist and discharged as he attempted to grab it, effectively shooting himself in the thigh. In September 2009, Buress received a 2 year jail sentence for having the concealed, unregistered weapon in public.
Plaxico is set to be released today and his NFL future is in question. He is now 34 years old but there will be plenty of teams jockeying to get him on their roster despite the current NFL lockout. After all, take into consideration of how Micheal Vick responded after his release from prison for dog fighting. After missing two full seasons, Vick went on to set career highs in passing, rushing & quarterback rating. He led the Eagles to the NFC East title and won the AP Comeback Player of the Year.
It will be an interesting summer in the NFL.
