E3 2011 Highlights
The 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles is the première event for some of video entertainments biggest names to showcase what they have in store for the coming years. This year’s show brought in a slew of major announcements and unveilings from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. There are tons of articles circulating the web about this event, but we here at VIRILE have cut it short and sweet for those of you looking to get to the meat and potatoes of the event.
With the XBOX 360 still it’s premiere device, Microsoft launched this years show with a demonstration of the much anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. There will be downloadable content, map packs and extra mission – all landing on the 360 first.
Much of the Microsoft presentation focused on the Kinect. The demo showed such capabilities as integrating Bing technology (Microsoft’s search engine) and integration with upcoming game releases on the system. Microsoft looks to integrate the peripheral with such headliners as Mass Effect 3 and Ghost Recon.
Gears of War 3, the much-anticipated final installment of the series, was also debuted. Actor/Rapper Ice T (who performs voiceovers was brought to the stage to demonstrate the co-op mode. This will certainly be the biggest title to hit the 360 this year.
Master Chief is coming back yet again. Two Halo games are set to be released: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition looks to give the original XBOX launch title a reboot with enhanced graphics and sound. Microsoft ended the show with a trailer for Halo 4, as Master Chief was awoken from his cryogenic chamber to find himself hurling through space on a burning ship. Halo 4 is set for a holiday release.
Sadly, Sony had to spend much of their presentation recovering from the recent PSN Network hacking fiasco. Sony now has to focus on providing new releases while keeping their multi-player network secure.
Sony started off with a preview of their exclusive series, Uncharted 3. The trailer is said to be mind blowing and even rivaling that of a Hollywood action movie. A 3D Demo of Resistance 3 followed with a preview of the player’s attempt to defend New York City in the 1950s against an alien invasion.
Sony has also debuted the successor the PSP, the PlayStation Vita. The powerful nextgen handheld device will be sold this holiday season for $249 with 3G/Wifi models selling for $299.
Sony is also investing more into 3D. They plan to bundle a 24” monitor, 3D glasses and HDMI cable with a copy of Resistance 3 for just under $500.
Kobe Bryant made an appearance to show off the NBA 2K12 installment on the PlayStation 3 using the PlayStation Move controller. The presentation seemed to not go as well, but I’m sure Sony will iron the kinks out before release. Also on the horizon, Little Big Planet 2 and Infamous 2.
Nintendo comes out this year sticking to their guns. Keeping their presentation short and sweet, new editions of Legend of Zelda, Kirby and Mario will be coming to the system. A new Smash Brothers game will be headed to the 3DS and Wii as well.
Nintendo revealed plans for their next revolutionary console. The Wii U comes with a brand new controller that is a combination of a traditional game pad and a tablet computer. The controller comes complete with a six-inch touch screen as well. In a video demonstration, the controller showed its many uses as players can throw ninja stars from the system to a TV, bring up internet videos for a party to see, or even take the full game off the TV down to their controller if a friend wants to watch something on TV.
It appears to be have been a great show. If you’d like more detailed coverage, jump over to Gamespot.com.
